having been forbidden by the Holy Spirit to speak the word in Asia
they were trying to go into Bithynia, and the Spirit of Jesus did not permit them
(Acts 16:6-7)
As we examine Pauls first visit to Philippi, we are unpacking last Sundays message entitled 7 Marks of Highly Contagious Christians. His first visit is recorded in Acts chapter 16.
Today we look at: #2: Paul was sensitive to the Spirit.
They had a goalthey wanted to go back to the cities they had visited on the First Missionary Journey. They assumed they would encourage some of the believers and then find new places to preach the Gospel. They had completed some of their work and wanted to go into Asia, but the Lord closed the door. Back-to-back verses
forbidden and did not permit. God was about to open a door into Europebut they didnt know it!
Has God ever closed a door in your life? Sometimes it is painful; sometimes confusing; sometimes we understandother times we dont.
Their motives were goodtheir goals were good. But God said, not you when they started in one direction and not now when they turned to another.
How do we develop sensitivity to Gods direction?
Spending time in the Word of God is essential. Unless we know what He is like, we can not hear His voice. He gives us direction through His Word, prayer, the counsel of others and circumstances (in that order). He gives peace (even in a storm) and sometimes He removes His peace (when circumstances all seem to be right).
Here is something to think about when you are seeking Gods direction.
When it is not the right direction
.God says, NO.
When I am not right
.God says, GROW.
When the timing is not right
.God says, SLOW.
When everything is right
.God says, GO!
